All Puffed Up | When Theology Becomes More About You than God

Theology is the study of God, but it can have a strange way of dividing people into competing camps. This, of course, is not its aim.

In 1 Corinthians 13 Paul says, “If I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. We see then, that knowledge is not enough, it’s also not the goal. The goal then is to see and know who God is because He is the greatest treasure.

Here is what can happen, we use theology and knowledge to do for us, what the Word and the Holy Spirit, through the Word, will do for us. We can become arrogant, or puffed up, in the knowledge that we believe we have acquired by ourselves and then go on to use that knowledge for ourselves. But this is not the way God created it! He created us to be His image-bearers so that others would be able to see Him through us.

Theology IS important, but it’s always for a purpose, and that purpose is to know God and make Him known. It’s to have a genuine love for Christ and others, with the chief end always being God’s own Glory.

We love you, the listener, and truly hope this helps you in your walk. We pray you are being built up in knowledge and truth so that you may walk closer with Christ every day and also that you will see those in your world come to know Him as Lord and Savior.
